Back in May I had my one and only boat ride on the Kuskokwim River. The other interpreter, Rebekka, and I were invited to join Kevin and Esther Smart of Napikaik for a trip upriver. We left Bethel at 7 p.m. and traveled for about 45 minutes until we reached a stopping point where we all walked up onto the tundra and picked labrador tea and looked around. Back in the boat, the Smarts had a thermos of hot water and sugar waiting for the fresh plants, and we all drank the delicious and warming tea. Back in the boat - we continued past Kwethluk to visit the old Moravian Mission School which has been abandoned for many years. Many Yupik elders recall spending time there either as a student or an employee. Children were sent there during the flu epidemic of the early 1900’s when they lost their parents. On the way home we were treated to a truly stupendous sunset that reached its final glory just as we pulled back into the small boat harbor at Bethel around midnight.
See the pictures in “A day on the Kuskokwim River”. Also - you can see the pictures of my current apartment in “August 2007 - my new house”.
